New Zealand Reveals Date for Next Parliamentary Elections
The prime minister disclosed the date through a post on X, the social media platform owned by a US-based company, declaring: "I've just announced that the 2026 General Election will be held on Saturday, 7 November."
Luxon has led the government since the final months of 2023, following his National Party's electoral victory that resulted in a three-party coalition arrangement with New Zealand First and the ACT Party.
Addressing the nation's priorities moving forward, the prime minister stated: "With the election date announced, our priority is to continue delivering on our plan to fix the basics and build the future, securing a better outcome for Kiwis for generations to come."
Parliamentary terms in New Zealand last three years under the country's electoral system. The most recent nationwide vote took place on Oct. 14, 2023.
