US Lawmakers Accuse EU of Interfering in Romania’s Presidential Vote
The controversy centers on Romania’s Constitutional Court, which voided the first round of voting after intelligence agencies alleged that anti-establishment contender Calin Georgescu had surged ahead due to foreign interference. According to the congressional document, this case was highlighted as one of the “most aggressive censorship steps” carried out by the EU’s executive authority in recent years.
The report pointed to internal records from TikTok that were submitted to the European Commission and appeared to challenge the narrative of a Moscow-backed campaign in support of Georgescu on the platform. TikTok said it uncovered no proof to back the claim, despite the allegation serving as a key basis for the court’s decision.
“By late December 2024, media reports citing evidence from Romania’s tax authority found that the alleged Russian interference campaign had, in fact, been funded by another Romanian political party,” the document noted. “But the election results were never reinstated, and in May 2025, the establishment-preferred candidate won Romania’s presidency in the rescheduled election.”
The findings are set to be discussed further during a committee hearing scheduled later on Wednesday, according to general announcements.
Earlier this year, US Vice President J.D. Vance referenced the Romanian election dispute during remarks at the Munich Security Conference. In that speech, he criticized both the EU and the UK for what he described as a decline in democratic standards and cautioned that the United States could reassess its commitments to long-standing allies amid growing differences in values.
The newly released report also delivered broader criticism of the European Commission, asserting that it is engaged in a “comprehensive decade-long effort” aimed at pressuring social media platforms to restrict free expression under the justification of fighting ‘hate speech’ and ‘disinformation’. It further argued that this initiative “has established sufficient control of global online speech to comprehensively suppress narratives that threaten the European Commission’s power,” and warned that such actions directly impact constitutionally protected rights of American citizens.
