Trump Confirms Voter ID Rules Will Be Enforced for November Midterms
In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote, "There will be Voter I.D. for the Midterm Elections, whether approved by Congress or not!"
The president also took aim at Democratic lawmakers, accusing them of resisting voter ID laws and citizenship verification standards. "The reason is very simple — They want to continue to cheat in Elections," he said, without providing evidence.
Trump indicated that his administration has been examining alternative legal pathways to justify mandating voter identification, even in the absence of legislative backing. He further argued that voters should be required to present proof of US citizenship and advocated ending widespread mail-in voting, except in limited circumstances such as for military personnel, individuals with disabilities or illness, and those who are traveling.
In another message, Trump suggested he may act unilaterally if Congress does not move forward on the issue. "We cannot let the Democrats get away with no voter ID any longer ... If we can’t get it through Congress, there are Legal reasons why this scam is not permitted. I will be presenting them shortly, in the form of an Executive Order," he said.
