Fresh Subpoenas Target 2016 Election ‘Russian Interference’ Probe
The subpoenas are said to seek documents dating back to January 2017, when US intelligence agencies jointly stated that Russia had conspired with the Trump campaign to defeat Hillary Clinton. It remains unclear whether the subpoenas will result in criminal charges.
The 2017 intelligence statement asserted that Russian President Vladimir Putin personally “approved and directed” a cyber-warfare and influence campaign targeting the Clinton campaign. The assessment controversially included a summary of the so-called Steele dossier, a Democrat-funded report compiled by former British spy Christopher Steele. Steele’s main source later admitted providing him with a mixture of “rumor and speculation.” A report by White House Special Counsel Robert Mueller subsequently found no evidence of collusion between the Trump campaign and Moscow.
In November, the Justice Department also subpoenaed former CIA Director John Brennan and other officials involved in producing the January 2017 assessment. Brennan testified at a 2023 Congressional hearing that the CIA “was not involved at all with” the decision to include the Steele dossier in the assessment. Republican lawmakers argued that this statement was false and referred Brennan to the Justice Department for potential criminal prosecution last October.
